![]() ![]() I was asked to rank the Top 25 Detroit Red Wings of all time, and I couldn't help but wonder how to approach this task. One option would be to re-print a list of franchise scoring leaders and add Terry Sawchuck to the mix. Alternatively, I could follow the common practice of starting with Gordie Howe and working my way down the list. ![]() However, as someone who is tired of seeing lists that are simply statistical rankings or popularity contests, I wanted to create something more interesting to write and read. The problem is that defining what "the top" means can be subjective. Still, I believe there are too many lists that don't truly consider the value of each player. In general, statistics play a significant role in sports, and it's natural for them to feature prominently in rankings. However, when it comes to selecting players or developing strategies, there's more to consider than just numbers. "Top" lists have become ubiquitous in popular culture, with everything from movies to vacation destinations to places to eat organic ice cream while wearing a three-cornered hat being ranked. The sports world is no exception, with numerous "top" lists already out there. To be honest, I wasn't thrilled when I received this assignment. With so many existing "Top 10," "20," and "100" lists, it's hard to add value to the conversation.
